London with Kids Under 5: Top Family Attractions and Tips for a Stress-Free Trip

The thought of tackling central London with two young children is enough to send chills down any parent’s spine – especially if, like me, you’re northern and have an innate fear of the Tube! (It’s those relentless beeping doors that can slam shut at any given moment!) But for our son’s 4th birthday, we wanted to do something different – something fun, within the UK, and full of adventure. London felt like the perfect place to make some new family memories.

Here’s what we got up to, the best attractions for under 5s, where we stayed, and our top tips for keeping it all as stress-free as possible!

Exploring the City: A Festive Family Adventure

We visited London in mid-November – one of the best times to go because Christmas had already arrived! Our aim was to show the boys some of the city’s famous landmarks while soaking up a bit of festive sparkle along the way.

We started our day with crepes and hot chocolates in Leicester Square, (we hopped on the tube to get here) which transforms into a festive wonderland this time of year. The Christmas market was our first of the season, complete with twinkling lights, stalls and even a small ice-skating rink.

Tip: Leicester Square is also home to the famous LEGO Store and M&M’s World – both absolute hits with little ones (though be prepared for queues!).

From there, we wandered over to Green Park for some open space and a breather. The boys loved watching the friendly birds and squirrels, and we were amazed to see people hand-feeding them. You might even spot ring-necked parakeets here – yep! Bright green tropical birds that have mysteriously made London their home since the 1960s! Legend has it they escaped from a film set (or a private collection), and have been thriving in the city’s parks ever since.

Next, we strolled to Buckingham Palace – a must-see for little ones to wave to the King (just in case he’s watching!).

Top Tip: If you time your visit right, you can catch the Changing of the Guard, which is always a crowd pleaser and little ones love it.

From there, we wandered through St. James’s Park, which is filled with wildlife, including herons and even pelicans – yes, six of them live there permanently! The boys were fascinated (as were we!).

Our route then took us past Westminster Abbey, Big Ben, and the Houses of Parliament, before walking over Westminster Bridge towards the South Bank. This is a great stretch for families – you’ll find street performers, musicians and pop-up food markets galore. We tucked into a Christmas dinner wrap served in a giant Yorkshire pudding (honestly, 10/10), while the boys danced to buskers playing by the London Eye (an iconic spot for taking in the most break-taking views of the city!).

As the afternoon faded, we continued to Covent Garden, where the Christmas decorations and street performers kept the festive energy high. We stopped for a quick drink while the boys marvelled at the lights and the LEGO pop up store and play area.

From there, we walked up to Regent Street to see the famous glowing angels and over to Carnaby Street for its colourful Christmas installation – both absolute must-sees if you’re visiting in winter. The boys also loved the dancing elves outside Hamleys, which added a touch of Christmas magic before our final stop.

We wrapped up our evening at the Trafalgar Square Christmas Market, soaking in the atmosphere over one last festive bite before catching the Tube back to our accommodation (which I will come to later). We covered a lot of ground on foot but it was absolutely worth it – the city felt truly magical at every turn.

Our Favourite Experience: A Day at London Zoo

We spent a full day at London Zoo and honestly, it was one of the best zoo experiences we’ve ever had. You can walk through tropical areas with monkeys and sloths above your head, wander through a rainforest of butterflies and even get close enough to see lions and tigers up close. See more of our trip in my reel here.

London Zoo is super family-friendly – you can easily explore with a pram or on foot. I did not expect there to be so many different areas where you can actually enter the habitat with the animals. We went “In With the Lemurs” and even ventured through the spider walkthrough, wandered through the rainforest where several species of monkeys and sloths hung right above our heads and we went on a bird safari and through Monkey Valley too. The boys were so excited. When we weren’t fully immersing ourselves in the enclosures, we still felt like we were part of the action, because we got so, so close to lions, tigers and even gorillas! The size of the gorillas was simply astounding; it was surreal to see how similar to us they are.

Another family friendly addition to the zoo is ZooTown – a brand new indoor role play adventure aimed at children aged 3-8 (though under 3s are welcome too with a toddler ticket). Here you can step into a miniature zoo-town: be a zookeeper, vet, scientist or conservationist, dress up in costumes and explore interactive play zones for 45 – minute sessions (session booking required, £1 per child in addition to zoo entry).

Other Family Friendly Attractions in London

If you’re planning a trip to London with little ones under five, you’ll be spoilt for choice. Here are some of our favourite family friendly attractions that are perfect for young explorers:

Natural History Museum – Always a hit with children of all ages! From towering dinosaurs to hands on exhibits, there’s plenty to keep little ones engaged.

Diana Memorial Playground, Kensington Gardens – A must visit on a dry day. This magical Peter Pan-inspired playground features a huge wooden pirate ship!

SEA LIFE London Aquarium – Ideal for little ones who love animals. This one is indoors and easy to navigate.

Battersea Park Children’s Zoo – A smaller, quieter zoo that’s perfect for toddlers. With farm animals and great play zones it is an easy (and hopefully relaxed) trip out!

Afternoon Tea Bus Tours – A fun and unique way to see the city! Several themed tours run throughout the year including a festive Grinch Afternoon Tea Bus which is running this Christmas!

Tower of London – For slightly older toddlers (or those with longer attention spans!), this iconic landmark offers plenty to explore.

Where We Stayed - Family Friendly Comfort in the City

For this trip, we based ourselves in Battersea, a vibrant and family friendly area on the south side of the Thames. We had been visiting family in the south south beforehand so we drove into the city which meant we wanted somewhere that offered a parking space, easy transport links and a slightly calmer base than the heart of central London (while still being close enough to get there in minutes!).

We stayed in a lovely two bedroom apartment complete with a spacious living area, kitchen and all the family essentials including a travel cot and high chair. The apartment was just a five minute walk from the nearest Tube station and in under 20 minutes (around five stops), we were right in the centre of London ready to explore.

You can check out the apartment we stayed in here.

Battersea turned out to be the perfect location for families. It has a relaxed, local feel but with plenty going on nearby. Battersea Power Station – now one of London’s most exciting destinations – is just around the corner and offers everything from restaurants and riverside walks to pop up events and experiences (we spotted the Jurassic Park Experience when we were there!). There’s also the Battersea Power Station Food Market, which is ideal for a relaxed family dinner after a busy day exploring.

Tips for Visiting London with Young Kids

London is one of those cities where you’ll never do it all – especially with little ones. Even with the Tube, you’ll end up walking a lot, so I recommend focusing on one (or at most two) core attractions per day. If you’re planning a day exploring the city, you can definitely see a few key landmarks but make sure to factor in some time in green spaces where the kids can run free – pack a picnic to save on spending and let them stretch their legs.

Here are some practical tips to make your trip as smooth (and fun!) as possible:

  • Bring a lightweight pram – and check in advance which Tube stations have lifts.

  • Pack a buggy board if you’ll have a baby in a pram so your eldest can ride along when their little legs get tired.

  • Always carry snacks and a change of clothes – you’ll likely be out for most of the day!

  • Book attractions in advance – many popular spots offer timed entry slots and this is often the way to enter for slightly cheaper.

  • Try Uber Boats and buses for fun, child-friendly travel around the city – kids absolutely love these!

  • Plan no more than two major activities per day – it keeps the day enjoyable and stress-free with less pressure.

  • Stay central whenever possible to reduce travel times.

  • Carry a power bank for your phone – you’ll need it for maps, tickets and capturing all the memories.

  • Make sightseeing fun – we packed an I-Spy London book for our eldest to tick off the landmarks we saw – it kept him engaged and made sightseeing a game!

Final Thoughts - Why London Works with Little Ones

London can feel a little daunting, I’ll admit. It’s huge, busy, there’s the Tube to navigate and so much to see that it can all feel overwhelming. But with a simple day to day plan, you can tackle it – and even enjoy it – with your little ones.

Remember, London is one of the most impressive cities in the world and, of course, our capital. Its culture, history and vibrancy ripple through the rest of the UK, shaping what it means to be British. Showing our children the city, no matter their age, is an opportunity to connect them to that heritage and identity.

It’s a place where learning and adventure collide – the perfect mix of education, history, and family friendly fun, with so many incredible experiences on offer. Don’t shy away from it; embrace it! You’ll be glad you did and you’ll create memories that will last a lifetime.
