The UK’s Wildest Sleepover: What It’s Really Like to Stay at West Midland Safari

First Impressions: Jungle Luxury… in the Midlands?

From the moment we arrived, we were transported. The bold, immersive decor – all carved woods, deep colours and Asian-inspired touches – made it feel like we’d stepped into a luxurious jungle retreat, not a lodge in the UK. Panoramic views of the tiger habitat on one side and rich interiors on the other created the most authentic atmosphere.

The real magic started when our little ones ran to the enormous viewing window and there, just metres away, was a tiger, perched. It was wild, surreal and completely unforgettable.

Lodge Life: A Family Hideaway with a View

We booked the incredible Tiger Lodge at West Midland Safari Park hot tub lodge and yes – it’s as dreamy as it sounds.

A private, covered terrace with a hot tub and floor to ceiling glass overlooking the tiger enclosure? Heaven.

The lodge sleeps up to five and is perfectly laid out for families, with one main double bedroom and a second room with a double and an overhead bunk – which our eldest turned into his own mini viewing platform.

Everything is on one level, making it accessible and spacious.

A special feature we loved was the lodge TV which streams live footage from other animal enclosures so you can spy on the giraffes or elephants in real time. It was a fun touch that made us feel even more connected to the whole park.

Up Close with Wildlife: The Most Magical Morning

One thing to remember: this is nature on its own terms. The tigers roam freely and while food placement near the windows encourages visits – nothing is guaranteed. I have a tip to share, with this in mind, later on – so keep reading!

Our most incredible moments came in the early morning. As the sun rose, the shadows of pacing tigers flickered across the blinds. One wandered close while we sat in the hot tub. Another paused right outside the window, nose to nose with our boys. Their squeals of delight are a sound I’ll never forget.

It was so surreal and unlike anything we’ve experienced before.

Wild Dining: Effortless Meals with a Side of Safari

You don’t come here expecting gourmet food but you’ll be seriously surprised…

Before your stay, you pre select your dinner and breakfast from a menu and everything is delivered to your lodge, ready to heat and enjoy. Yes, it’s microwaved… but don’t let that fool you. The food is genuinely delicious: tender meats and desserts you’d expect from a fancy restaurant.

And the extras? Around 5pm, fresh, warm bread is delivered to your door. Breakfast the next morning arrives in a similar style. The whole setup is effortless and family friendly and adds to the authenticity of the whole experience!

Exclusive Experiences: When the Crowds Go Home

One of the most special parts of staying at the lodges is getting to explore the park without the daytime crowds.

As a guest, you get two day access to both the safari drive and the theme park. But the real treat? Exclusive early morning and after-hours access to raised platforms and paths. One morning, we wandered out just after sunrise – the park was still and the animals just beginning to stir (including a Cheetah, who me eldest did laps with) It was magic.

Another huge bonus? The Land of the Living Dinosaurs and Ice Age trails – filled with life-sized creatures that roar, move and thrill the kids (and adults!) as you explore. It’s like stepping into Jurassic Park and adds a totally different dimension to the trip. It’s educational too!

Top Tips for Booking Your Safari Lodge Stay

Book Smart

Check the season – Longer summer days mean more animal viewing time.

Look out for deals – They sometimes run Black Friday or seasonal offers.

Pick your animal lodge wisely – Giraffe or elephant lodges might be more engaging for toddlers with bigger animals to spot easily.

Maximise Your Time

Arrive early – You can explore the park before check in opens.

Do the safari drive first thing the next morning – fewer cars and less queues to see the animals.

Pack Like a Pro

Bring binoculars for spotting animals from afar.

Don’t forget a good camera – You’ll want to capture those up close moments.

Pack warm layers if you’re visiting outside summer – mornings can be chilly.
